Home Organizing Rules
Nobody likes rules. And although some are meant to be broken…
that won’t apply in this case, because following these will bring
you less clutter and more organization.
Home Organizing Rule #1:
“Touch it Once!”
This is a form of procrastination and it causes piles because
what most of us do with everyday clutter is put off taking action
until later.
Most people think that by cleaning something up later it’s saving
you time. And maybe it is for the time being.
But the fact is…it creates an even greater lack of time had you
taken care of the item right there and then.
And what happens is, to save a couple of seconds today you’re
losing even more time tomorrow.
For example…
You come home, throw the shirt on the bed because you’re going to
hang it up or throw it in the laundry basket later.
Or you shove it on a shelf in the closet to hang it later.
Or you leave a box or your shoes or any other neck-breaking items
on the stairs for later.
I know. Everyone’s a little lazy. You’ve worked hard all day and
the last thing you feel like doing is running a pair of shoes
upstairs or putting them where they belong (no, not on the stairs.)
But here’s the problem. This stuff is just added to the piles and
it spreads through the house like wild fire.
So take action right away and don’t “leave it for later.”
Follow the rules and touch it once…
-The coffee cup goes in the dishwasher, not on the
counter.
-The mail coming in the house should be dealt with immediately.
-The shirt goes in the laundry, in the hamper or on the hanger. Not
on the back of the chair.
Home Organizing Rule #2
Keep things together that belong together.
Sweaters with sweaters. Shirts with shirts. One shelf for snacks
and a shelf for cans.
Take a look around a fancy clothing store.
They’re designed to help you (the customer) find exactly what you
need and fast.
Wouldn’t it be nice to find whatever it is you’re looking for in a
matter of seconds?
You can, if you dedicate a specific space for everything you own.
Home Organizing Rule #3
Organize one thing or space or room at a time.
Work on one small space at a time in set increments and try and do
it every single day until you’re done. Then move onto the next
space.
It might only be for fifteen or twenty minutes, but the key is to
get something organized everyday and make it consistent.
If you try and tackle too much at once, you’ll simply find yourself
overwhelmed. Then you’ll give up — which is the last thing you
should have on your mind going forward.
If you’re serious about learning how to make your everyday life simplier, you can find here the complete guidance.
